Composite bonding is a minimally invasive cosmetic treatment that repairs and reshapes teeth with a tooth-coloured resin.

The composite material is carefully applied to the tooth, sculpted into shape, hardened with a special light and polished to blend naturally with your smile. It is commonly used to fix chipped, worn or uneven teeth, close small gaps, and improve the overall appearance of your teeth, usually without the need to remove healthy tooth structure.

Who is composite bonding suitable for?

Composite bonding may be suitable if you have:

Chipped, cracked or worn edges on your teeth.
Small gaps between your teeth that you would like to close.
Teeth that appear short, uneven or misshapen.
Discolouration or surface staining that does not respond to whitening.
A desire to improve your smile without drilling or surgery in most cases.

Risks and considerations

What are some of the risks or possible considerations?

Composite bonding is a safe and well-established treatment, but it is important to be aware that:

Composite resin can chip or stain over time, particularly with habits such as nail biting or regularly drinking tea, coffee or red wine.
Bonding is not as strong as natural enamel or porcelain restorations and may need repairing or replacing in the future.
The material does not respond to teeth whitening, so if you wish to whiten your teeth, this should be done before bonding.

How do I care for my composite bonding?

Brush twice daily and clean between your teeth with floss or interdental brushes.
Avoid biting hard objects such as pens, ice or fingernails.
Limit staining foods and drinks where possible.
Attend regular dental check-ups and hygiene appointments so we can monitor and polish your bonding.

Alternatives include:

Porcelain Veneers: A longer-lasting, highly stain-resistant option, though it usually involves some preparation of the natural tooth. See our Crowns & Veneers page.
Orthodontics: If gaps or crowding are the main concern, teeth straightening with aligners or braces may be a more appropriate solution.
Teeth Whitening: If discolouration is your only concern, professional whitening alone may achieve the improvement you are looking for.
