About Treatment

What counts as a dental emergency?

You should contact us for an emergency appointment if you experience:

  • Severe or persistent toothache that is not relieved by over-the-counter pain relief.
  • Facial swelling or a dental abscess, which may indicate infection.
  • A knocked-out, broken, chipped or loose tooth following an accident.
  • A lost or broken filling, crown, veneer or denture.
  • Bleeding from the mouth that does not stop, or trauma to the gums or soft tissues.

If you have facial swelling affecting your vision or breathing, or difficulty swallowing, please seek immediate medical attention at A&E.

What happens at an emergency appointment?

  • We will listen to your symptoms and examine the affected area, taking X-rays where needed.
  • Our first aim is to get you out of pain and manage any infection.
  • We will explain our findings, your treatment options and any associated costs before proceeding.
  • Where further treatment such as a filling, root canal or crown is needed, we will either complete it on the day, where possible or arrange a follow-up appointment.

What should I do while waiting to be seen?

  • For a knocked-out adult tooth, keep it moist in milk or saliva and contact us immediately, as time is critical.
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water to keep the area clean.
  • Use a cold compress on the outside of the face to help reduce swelling.
  • Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packaging, but do not place aspirin directly on the gum.

Do I need to be a registered patient?

No. We welcome both existing patients and new patients for emergency care. Whether you live in Prestwood, Great Missenden or the surrounding areas, our team will do everything we can to see you promptly.

At Smiles 4 Ever in Prestwood, Great Missenden, we understand how distressing dental emergencies can be. If you are in pain or have damaged a tooth, please call us on 01494 30 25 25 and our friendly team will help you as soon as possible.

Frequently asked questions

1. Can I get a same-day emergency dental appointment in Prestwood?

Yes, in most cases. We reserve time in our diary for dental emergencies and aim to see patients in pain on the same day. Call us as early as possible on 01494 30 25 25 so we can offer you the earliest available appointment.

2. How much does an emergency dental appointment cost?

The cost of an emergency appointment covers your examination, any X-rays needed and immediate pain relief where possible. Any further treatment will be discussed with you, along with a clear breakdown of costs, before it is carried out. Please see our fees page or call us for current pricing.

3. What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?

Handle the tooth by the crown, not the root, and if possible, place it back into the socket. If not, keep it in milk or saliva and contact us straight away. A knocked-out tooth has the best chance of being saved if it is re-implanted within an hour.

4. Do you see new patients for dental emergencies?

Yes. You do not need to be registered with us to receive emergency care. We welcome new patients from Prestwood, Great Missenden and the surrounding areas.

5. What should I do if I have a dental emergency outside opening hours?

If you have severe swelling affecting your breathing, swallowing or vision, go to A&E immediately. For other urgent dental problems outside our opening hours, you can call NHS 111 for advice, then contact us as soon as we reopen so we can arrange to see you.
